The Moon has no light of its own, but shines through reflected light from the Sun. From day to day, the Moon's disc seems to assume a different shape. These shapes are as phases and there are eight of them. During these phases, the side of the Moon visible from the Earth first waxes, then wanes. A complete cycle from new Moon to new Moon takes 29.5 days. The cusp between the old Moon and the new is known as 'the darks'.
