The Blurb
Kate Hadley finds a bundle of old letters in the attic of her newly restored home, Rookery Hall, on the Isle of Wight. From it she learns that Rookery was once the base of a notorious band of smugglers led by Sir Edward de Lacy, squire of Rookery and Captain Charles Black. The more she learns about Rookery’s past the more she realises that her home is still being used as a base for smugglers. She suspects it is her husband, Jack, and their business partner, Luke. She also believes Jack is having an affair and Kate is determined to find out.
Thomas Wheelan, estate manager of Rookery, who began the letters in 1796, writes of events leading up to the disappearance of his friends, Catherine de Lacy, and William Meade. Kate finds circumstantial evidence that she is related to Catherine and is therefore determined to unravel the puzzle of their escape. She is convinced they were both murdered in tunnels beneath the house, and needs to find them to prove her family connection.
